Persons involved with refurbishment or construction projects must ensure that the appropriate steps are taken at an early stage to identify and deal with all asbestos containing materials that may be disturbed as a result of the proposed work.
There have been a number of prosecutions in Jersey as a result of employees being unnecessarily exposed to potentially fatal asbestos fibres due to a lack of knowledge, training or understanding of the risks associated with asbestos.
The Health and Safety Executive in the UK states that on average, every week, 20 tradesmen die from exposure to asbestos.
Occupations that may come into contact with asbestos containing materials include:
- Plumbers
- Electricians
- Carpenters and Joiners
- Heating and Ventilation engineers
- Painters and decorators
- Plasterers
- Construction workers
- Fire alarm installers
